HB Studio’s 75th Anniversary season celebrates the many singular artists, past and present, who are part of our storied legacy–from legends like Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen to contemporary artists such as Scott Ellis and Mercedes Ruehl. This year, our public programs feature the vibrant pool of actors and artists working at HB today, as they build upon the work and practices cultivated here over our 75-years.
About HB Studio
HB Studio began in 1945 by founder Herbert Berghof, a noted Austrian Broadway actor and director, and a refugee from the Nazis. In the 1950s when opportunities closed for those on the Hollywood blacklist, Berghof and his partner, the renowned actress Uta Hagen, developed the Studio as a space that fostered creative and intellectual freedom, where artists could engage in ongoing practice.
HB has evolved as a sought-after haven for accomplished and aspiring theater artists. Our students, faculty and alumni form a vibrant community of notable and emerging talents. Today, HB serves nearly 6,000 people annually. Our constituents range in age from 9 to 90, and we are proud to welcome artists from all across the globe. Through the years, we have kept true to our mission to provide opportunity and support to actors, playwrights, and directors, through subsidized classes, financial aid, and affordable access to workspace.
We support the makers and creators that drive the theatre forward. We do so by nurturing their artistic development and sustaining a diverse, challenging, and supportive community that expresses the social, moral, and political realities of the world in which we live.
