HB Studio
One of New York’s original acting schools, HB Studio can imbue you with that New York authenticity. What sets this nonprofit organization apart is its atmosphere: HB Studio is not a college or conservatory, but a workplace for the teaching and practice of art. Students are expected to take charge of their own development and come forth with respect for the craft, highlighting areas where some deepening is necessary in their personal practice. HB training has roots in the European classical tradition and focuses on practicality. Stockard Channing, Bette Midler, and Sarah Jessica Parker are among its alumni.

Call For Proposals!

HB STUDIO ARTISTIC COUNCIL
2014 PERFORMANCE SPACE PROPOSAL GUIDELINES AND CALL FOR PROPOSALS
HB STUDIO FIRST FLOOR STUDIO SPACE

Deadline for Proposals: Thursday, December 19th, 2013
Selected Projects will be announced by: Friday, January 31st, 2014
View application and submit proposals online at: THIS LINK

HB Studio is dedicated to training and practice for the theatre and to the ongoing artistic development of actors, directors, and playwrights. The Studio will, at intervals throughout the year, make workshop performance space available in our First Floor Studio, for the development of creative projects that further the training and artistic practices fostered at HB. The Studio is not a producing organization, nor should these presentations be construed as “showcases” or “productions.” Rather, we offer an opportunity for associated artists to collaborate on experimental projects, to be shared among peers and colleagues, for constructive critical feedback and mutual growth.

Eligible Projects include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • New play readings or exploratory staging of new works, including work developed in the Studio’s playwriting or directing classes
  • Original staging or exploration of existing works
  • Works exploring the theatrical use of movement, voice or music
  • Projects mentored, developed, or directed by HB faculty or students
  • Projects evolving from advanced Studio class work, workshops, or labs
  • Projects mentored or directed by professional guest artists

While we can offer access to rehearsal and performance space, at this stage in our evolution the Studio is unable to offer financial support for these performance projects. The ideal projects for this opportunity will be those that cultivate a “no budget” aesthetic – self-produced, bare bones, using invention to create the scene, with hand-made, gathered, or borrowed equipment. Limited temporary storage can be made available during the 4 weekends of production offered in the first floor studio.

Six performance slots will be made available during 2014. Each project selected will be given 4 weekends (Saturday and Sunday evenings) to work after class hours (from 6pm) in the First Floor Studio Space. These dates may be used for rehearsal, presentation, or for both. The projects selected will also be given access to free rehearsal space elsewhere in the Studio as it becomes available on the weekly schedule. The performance slots available during 2014 are as follows:

Project #1: March 29 & 30, April 5 & 6, 12 & 13, 19 & 20
Project #2: May 10 & 11, 17 & 18, 24 & 25, 31 & June 1
Project #3: June 21 & 22, 28 & 29, July 5 & 6, 12 & 13
Project #4: July 26 & 27, Aug 2 & 3, 9 & 10, 16 & 17
Project #5: Sept 20 & 21, 27 & 28, Oct 4 & 5, 11 & 12
Project #6: Oct 25 & 26, Nov 1 & 2, 8 & 9, 15 & 16

Projects may be performed for an invited audience of friends and peers, students and faculty, and will be announced via the Studio’s weekly notice and Facebook postings.
