INFO SESSION: The Performing Arts Legacy Project

Are you an Actor 62+ years of age interested in documenting your Legacy and Life’s Work? Are you someone interested in documenting the legacy of others?

This Spring HB Studio will offer a ten week workshop, pairing Actors 62+ years of age with Fellows, to walk each pair through the process of documenting the Actor’s legacy. Learn more about participating as an Actor or a Fellow at by joining us for an info session about the workshop:

“The Uta Hagen Award” recognizes female teachers of acting at the college or university level

The Uta Hagen Award is presented and sponsored by the College of Fellows of the American Theatre in Honor of the centennial of HB Studio master teacher Uta Hagen.

The Uta Hagen Award recognizes female teachers of acting at the college or university level at a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival-affiliated school. Preference will be given to candidates who are distinguished as full or part-time teachers of acting and distinguished as working actors. Preference will also be given to mid-career candidates.

All nominations postmarked or emailed by March 1, 2019 will be considered. Learn more about nominations and eligibility of The Uta Hagen Award.

The Uta Hagen Award

The College of Fellows of the American Theatre Uta Hagen Award, given in celebration of Uta Hagen at 100 and the 2020 centennial of the women’s vote (a voice for all women), includes the following:

  • A scholarship from HB Studio to attend a one week Hagen Teacher Lab at HB Studio in New York City beginning on either August 4, 2019, or August 11, 2019. All nominees must be available to attend one of these Hagen Teacher Labs in August 2019;
  • A $2,500 stipend for travel and accommodations from the College of Fellows of the American Theatre to attend the HB Studio Hagen Teacher Lab in New York City; and
  • Airfare and accommodations (provided by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival) to Washington, D.C. to receive the award on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. All nominees must be available to attend the award ceremony in Washington, D.C. on that date.

The Hagen Institute is now accepting applications for its Core Training, Summer Intensive,  and Teacher Training programs.

The Hagen Core Training is a full-time one-year training program for actors who seek full immersion in the practice of their craft. It runs Mon – Fri, 9:30am – 3:30pm, September 16, 2019 – June 5, 2020 (3 terms; orientation: Sept 15, 2019). READ MORE

The Hagen Summer Intensive is a rigorous, 6-week workshop that probes the practical applications of Uta Hagen’s technique as discussed in her book A CHALLENGE FOR THE ACTOR. It runs Mon – Fri, 9am – 5pm, June 24, 2019 – August 2, 2019 (Orientation on June 23, 2019). READ MORE

The Hagen Teacher Training is a program for artists and educators interested in experiencing the depth and utility, for professional actor training, of Uta Hagen’s Object Exercises and scene study process. Hagen’s Teacher’s Lab 1  runs Sun – Fri, 9:30am – 4:30pm, August 4 – 9, 2019. Hagen’s Teacher’s Lab 2  runs Sun – Fri, 9:30am – 4:30pm, August 11 – 16, 2019.

Casting Call: Seeking Actors for The Pat & Julie Project – Winter 2019

HB’s Director’s New Play Lab, taught by director Pat Golden, and Playwriting 2 & Playwriting Studio Practice classes, taught by playwright Julie McKee, seek actors for scenes from new plays to be performed as Staged Readings at HB Playwrights Theater.

Performances: Sat, March 9 and Sun, March 10, 2019 @ HB Playwrights Theatre @ 7PM
Tech: March 6 & 7; Dress: March 8 & 9

Rehearsals: Directors will schedule regular rehearsals at the actor’s convenience including Class Presentations on select Mondays between 2:30P-5:30P.

Auditions: Please submit your headshot and resume to directingclass@hbstudio.org ASAP for an audition appointment on Thursday January 17 or Monday, January 21, 2019. Feel free to submit yourself for several roles.

Call for Playwright Submissions: Winter 2019 Staged Readings – The Pat & Julie Project

HB Playwrights from Julie McKee‘s Playwriting classes are invited to submit original work for the Pat & Julie Project, a weekend of staged readings on March 9 & 10 in the HB Playwrights Theatre.

Application Deadline: Dec 31
(NOTE: In addition to online submission, hard copies must be snail-mailed and received by this date)

Up to six (6) selected plays will be paired with directors from Pat Golden‘s Director’s New Play Lab for a joint Staged Reading Project. The staged readings will be presented to an invited audience. This is an opportunity to see your play beyond the sit down reading, and to work with a director. The process will directly address the art of collaboration.
