HB Studio will be open Wednesday, January 22, with classes held as usual.

HB Studio is pleased to introduce its newest faculty members for the Winter Term:

Reed Birney, who has been appearing on Broadway since 1977, joins us to teach Acting 2: Contemporary Scene Study.

David Deblinger, founder of the Labyrinth Theatre Company, will direct Winter Performance Lab 1.

Rick Sordelet, one of the country’s top fight directors, will team teach Stage Combat with his son, Christian Kelly-Sordelet.

Noel Velez, a professional actor in the American theatre for over 15 years, joins us to teach ESL: Acting in English.

We are thrilled to welcome these esteemed artists into the HB community.

The offices at HB Studio will be closed from Tuesday December 24 – Wednesday January 1.  We will reopen on Thursday January 2.  As always, our online registration system is available 24/7.  If you haven’t registered for the Winter Term yet, take a look at our class offerings.

Seeking artists of all types! HB Performance Labs are an opportunity for HB students to study and perform FREE of charge.

During Winter Performance Lab 1, directed by David Deblinger, students will develop a theme-based performance piece from the minds and hearts of the artists involved.

Auditions: Tues, Dec 17, 11:00am – 2:00pm & Wed, Dec 18, 1:00pm – 4:00pm.

TISA CHANG, Artistic Producing Director, celebrates four decades in the American Theatre as dancer, actress, director, producer, and founded Pan Asian Rep in 1977 to champion professional opportunities for Asian American artists. She has performed in films and TV:  AMBUSH BAY, ESCAPE FROM IRAN, YEAR OF THE DRAGON; on stage in various productions of  WORLD OF SUZIE WONG, FLOWER DRUM SONG, KING & I, SWEET CHARITY, and  A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM.

Tisa has directed over 40 productions at La Mama ETC & Pan Asian and specializes in intercultural productions notably the bilingual production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM; the Marathi Indian epic GHASHIRAM KOTWAL, RASHOMON (also in Havana) and 2007’s THE JOY LUCK CLUB and DOJOJI: The Man Inside the Bell  in May/June 2013.

Honors include a 2013 Commendation from Comptroller Liu,  2012 Visionary  Award from the Office of Mayor Bloomberg, 2004 Alfred Drake Award  from Brooklyn College,  2002 Lifetime  Achievement  from The Organization of Chinese  Americans  and 1991 Barnard College Medal of Distinction.  She is a former Board member of SDC the national union for stage directors and choreographers.

A deconstruction of Shakespeare’s tragedy from the perspective of the sleepless descent into madness. An ensemble performance. In an empty space (give me any empty space and I can make it a bare stage – thank you, Peter Brook), where Macbeth is approached as Shakespeare Our Contemporary (thank you, Jan Kott), through the prism of The Theatre of the Absurd (thank you, Samuel Beckett).
