Acting in Accent: American Southern

This workshop will be held online via Zoom Conferencing:

Presented by: Amanda Quaid

In this accent workshop for actors, you will learn the physical and vocal foundation for dialects of the American South. Using material from both contemporary and period plays, we will explore these dialects’ vocal postures, musicality, and areas of resonance. Attention will be paid to variations of Southern dialects based on location, class, time period, race and culture. We will also examine working with Southern dialects in practice through scene and/or monologue work.

No prior dialect experience necessary.

Online Teaching Statement from Instructor Amanda Quaid: “Adapting dialect classes to Zoom is quite straightforward, and even has some advantages over in-person learning, as we can share audio and video in real time from the web. Packets of materials are given in advance, along with native speaker audio. We learn the sounds as a group, with individual attention for phrases that correspond to each sound. We may also make use of breakout rooms for conversation practice, and screen share to observe native speakers in action together.”
