Playwriting Workshop with José Rivera

Presented by: José Rivera

To be held in person in Spring 2024:

Award-winning, nationally recognized playwright José Rivera will teach a 6-week playwriting workshop at HB Studio. Focused on the practicality of writing for the theater, meeting 3 hours once a week, the class will assume no previous experience or knowledge of writing plays. All levels, styles and voices will be welcomed. There will be a lot of writing done during the class. We’ll run through a variety of exercises – writing from prompts, writing about archetypes and dreams, doing improvisations, crafting monologues, exploring different genres, creating an inner-life for your characters, analyzing the building blocks of stories/plots, exploring adaptations, discussing my “36 Assumptions about Writing Plays,” etc. At home, each student will write a 10-minute play which may be presented at the end of the class at a semi-public presentation (to be determined).

José Rivera’s 26 full-length plays have been seen nationally and internationally and translated into a dozen languages. His Obie Award-winners MARISOL and REFERENCES TO SALVADOR DALI MAKE ME HOT, both produced by The Public Theatre, NY, are taught at universities around the country, as well as his essay 36 ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT PLAYWRITING. Other plays include…read more
