Word Play: Exploring Sound and Sense in Heightened Text

Instructor: Theresa McElwee

Held online via Zoom:

This workshop is designed to give you specific and visceral voice and speech tools to more fully engage and play with text that is “heightened.” Using tools and principles of Knight-Thompson Speechwork™ as well as concepts pioneered by Lessac, Berry, Fitzmaurice, and Rodenburg, we will explore the deep speech connection between the sound and the sense of a heightened text. Attention will also be given to the “height” of language, rhetorical structure, poetic form and rhythm, and how to use these tools to activate, personalize and embody the text. Shakespeare, Sound Poetry, Spoken Word, nursery rhymes, oratory as well as poetry in other languages will serve as launch pads for the work.
