Movement for Actors: Laban, Character, and Text

This class builds off of the physical explorations of awareness, expression, and transformation you have already begun in your training as an actor. In this 10 week intensive, we focus on the work of Rudolf Laban. We will continue to work very technically – to drastically increase your strength and flexibility in a variety of daily warm ups as well as engaging in ensemble and partner exercises. However, we will focus mainly on Laban’s theory of movement, which becomes the springboard for working with character. Students begin working in a more practical way through scene work and the use of heightened text. By the end of the term, students should demonstrate a significant increase in the ability to take physical and emotional risks on the page, and be able to sense this growth within themselves. This growth should be evident in the student’s personal sense of emotional and physical expansion, as well as a more flexible range of expression when it comes to playing characters.

Prior movement training recommended.
