ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Anne Meara and her husband, Jerry Stiller, are esteemed alumni of HB Studio. As the outspoken and hilarious comedy duo Stiller and Meara, they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show 36 times and received many awards for their radio and TV commercials. Both Anne and Jerry enjoyed thriving careers on stage and screen, and Meara earned four Emmy nominations and one Tony Award nomination during a career that spanned over 60 years. After-Play won an Outer Critics’ Circle John Gassner Award the year it debuted, premiering at Manhattan Theater Club during the 1994-1995 season.

Leonard Bernstein – composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador, and humanitarian – is one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century. Bernstein’s steadfast belief in the power of art to lift, transform, delight and educate was his antidote to a world full of violence and unpredictability. A charter member of HB’s Playwrights Foundation and a longtime friend to HB’s founders, HB Studio is thrilled to present this benefit evening with Broadway stars in a tribute to his work, during the worldwide #Bernsteinat100 celebration.

MARICELA DE LA LUZ LIGHTS THE WORLD

“Aaaaah! My eyes are melting in my face! …”
…so began José Rivera’s fanciful, family-friendly play MARICELA DE LA LUZ LIGHTS THE WORLD*, following the adventures of Maricela and her brother Riccardo as they save the world from a trickster god and impending weather catastrophe.
The first event of HB’s 2018 Benefit Series, a special presentation of Academy-award nominated José Rivera‘s whimsical play, featuring Vanessa Aspillaga – star of the Pulitzer-prize winning drama ANNA IN THE TROPICS on Broadway; and directed by David Deblinger, HB faculty member and co-founder of the Labyrinth Theater Company.
Also featuring the talents of Oscar A. L. Cabrera, Paula Pizzi, Johnny Sanchez, Ron Orbach, Glenda Delli, Beethovan Oden, and Satoshi Deleanu. A portion of proceeds from the reading was donated towards The Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program to support Hurricane Maria-related needs and recovery in Puerto Rico.
