“I believe HB made me a better human being. My years as a student, teacher, actor, and administrator at HB have been richly rewarding, allowing me a clearer understanding of the human experience and the commonality of the problems that beset and challenge us throughout history.”
–Richard Mawe
ABOUT RICHARD MAWE
Dr. Richard C. Mawe (1929-2022, HB President Emeritus) began his HB training in 1956 while serving as Flight Physiologist in the U.S. Navy. During his tenure at Hunter College, where he retired as the Dean of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics, he continued his studies as well as taught at HB. During those years, he developed a close relationship to HB’s founders, Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen. After Berghof’s death, Hagen invited his administrative help and advice. Following the loss of Uta Hagen, and designation as sole member of the corporation, Mawe created the first Board of Directors for HB Studio, and served as President for many years. During those years, he appeared on stage, film and television, pursuing a lifelong passion, and becoming more deeply aware of the needs and challenges facing theater artists.
ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Richard Mawe Scholarship Fund seeks to honor Richard’s legacy while expanding support for these artists.
HB Studio offers professional classes in the dramatic arts for committed actors, directors, and playwrights—beginning and experienced—to hone their skills in a community of peers and mentors. In the spirit of our founders, Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghof, we seek to foster an environment where creative freedom prevails and artists are challenged to take their work to the next level. We offer financial support year-round to artists.
Your fully-charitable contributions to the Richard Mawe Scholarship Fund will go directly to subsidizing tuition for participants who might otherwise lack the means to study their craft.
Thank you for joining us in honoring Richard Mawe’s remarkable legacy by helping us pay it forward.
