“The Uta Hagen Award” recognizes female teachers of acting at the college or university level

The Uta Hagen Award is presented and sponsored by the College of Fellows of the American Theatre in Honor of the centennial of HB Studio master teacher Uta Hagen.

The Uta Hagen Award recognizes female teachers of acting at the college or university level at a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival-affiliated school. Preference will be given to candidates who are distinguished as full or part-time teachers of acting and distinguished as working actors. Preference will also be given to mid-career candidates.

All nominations postmarked or emailed by March 1, 2019 will be considered. Learn more about nominations and eligibility of The Uta Hagen Award.

The Uta Hagen Award

The College of Fellows of the American Theatre Uta Hagen Award, given in celebration of Uta Hagen at 100 and the 2020 centennial of the women’s vote (a voice for all women), includes the following:

  • A scholarship from HB Studio to attend a one week Hagen Teacher Lab at HB Studio in New York City beginning on either August 4, 2019, or August 11, 2019. All nominees must be available to attend one of these Hagen Teacher Labs in August 2019;
  • A $2,500 stipend for travel and accommodations from the College of Fellows of the American Theatre to attend the HB Studio Hagen Teacher Lab in New York City; and
  • Airfare and accommodations (provided by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival) to Washington, D.C. to receive the award on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. All nominees must be available to attend the award ceremony in Washington, D.C. on that date.

Broadway World Announces HB Studio’s Uta Hagen at 100 Celebration

HB Studio, one of New York’s original acting studios, has announced Uta Hagen at 100, a series of special events and workshops celebrating the centenary of its master teacher, the legendary actress and activist Uta Hagen. Uta Hagen at 100, honoring the three-time Tony Award winning actress and her legacy as a pioneering theater artist, activist and master teacher of HB Studio, will kick off on Monday, February 25 with a series of centennial events. The celebration will culminate on Monday, June 10 with a centennial gala honoring the actress, whose 100th birthday is Wednesday, June 12.

The Hagen Teacher Training is a program for artists and educators interested in experiencing the depth and utility, for professional actor training, of Uta Hagen’s Object Exercises and scene study process. Hagen’s Teacher’s Lab 1  runs Sun – Fri, 9:30am – 4:30pm, August 4 – 9, 2019. Hagen’s Teacher’s Lab 2  runs Sun – Fri, 9:30am – 4:30pm, August 11 – 16, 2019.

New Zealand, 1941, under threat of a Japanese invasion Louise MacGregor, formidable scientist, and Mae Smith, untried youngster, are sent on a mission in search of Pterocladia Lucida, a simple seaweed to aid the war effort.  

Inspired by Lucy B. Moore’s scouring of the New Zealand coast for seaweed beds, The Secret Life of Seaweed tells the story of two women who learn to feel deeply about nature and each other in a time when expressing feelings of deep emotional sadness were forbidden for the good of all.

Call for Playwright Submissions: Winter 2019 Staged Readings – The Pat & Julie Project

HB Playwrights from Julie McKee‘s Playwriting classes are invited to submit original work for the Pat & Julie Project, a weekend of staged readings on March 9 & 10 in the HB Playwrights Theatre.

(NOTE: In addition to online submission, hard copies must be snail-mailed and received by this date)

Up to six (6) selected plays will be paired with directors from Pat Golden‘s Director’s New Play Lab for a joint Staged Reading Project. The staged readings will be presented to an invited audience. This is an opportunity to see your play beyond the sit down reading, and to work with a director. The process will directly address the art of collaboration.
